According to the 'Halifax quality of life survey',

1 Hart in Hampshire

2 Uttlesford in Essex

3 South Northamptonshire

4 Waverley

5 East Hertfordshire

6 Elmbridge

7 Rushcliffe

8 Wokingham

9 Winchester in Hampshire

10 Chelmsford

The criteria: They looked at factors including residents health, life expectancy, earnings, employment, crime rate, weather, traffic flow and broadband internet access.

Interestingly, Hart in Hampshire, a leafy district has been the best places to live for three consecutive years.

Hart keeps scoring top points in all categories, for example:

Health: 97.4% reported to be in good or fairly good health

Employment rate: 80% against national average of 71%

Live Expectancy: 82.9 years against national average of 79 years.

When considering re-location or purchase of a new home, I shall reference this article.

The list of the entire top 50 districts can be found here.

In addition, the happiest places to live, according to the 'Office of National Statistics' are Northern Ireland, Hampshire (again), Bath, North East Somerset, Cornwall, Rutland, East Devon which scored highly.

More Countryside = Greater Happiness

The best places to live have one thing in common: plenty of countryside, people living in rural areas tend to be happier and enjoy a greater sense of community. Vice versa the most unhappiest places tend to be predominantly urban areas (Particularly London).
